چکیده

A fundamental problem for the development of P2P Distributed Virtual Environments is the definition of an overlay supporting interest management, i.e. determining all the entities of the virtual world that are relevant for a given peer. To this end, we propose a gossip-based approach that considers the coverage of the Area Of Interest of a peer as the guiding principle for the definition of the overlay and its maintenance. The resulting overlay provides a support for a besteffort resolution of interest management, so that it can be mostly supported through communications on the P2P overlay, with minimal intervention of a centralized entity. The paper presents a set of extensive simulations based on realistic mobility traces. The experimental results show the effectiveness of gossip for the construction of a best-effort Interest Management overlay.

A Full Awareness Method for Peer-to-Peer Distributed Virtual Environments

Resumen— In recent years, large scale distributed virtual environments (DVEs) have become a major trend in distributed applications. Since architectures based on networked servers seems to be not scalable enough to support massively multiplayer applications, peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures have been proposed for these systems. However, the main challenge of P2P architectures is the awareness p...

Providing Full Awareness to Distributed Virtual Environments Based on Peer-to-Peer Architectures

In recent years, large scale distributed virtual environments (DVEs) have become a major trend in distributed applications, mainly due to the enormous popularity of multiplayer online games in the entertainment industry. Since architectures based on networked servers seems to be not scalable enough to support massively multiplayer applications, peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures have been propose...

P2P Network Trust Management Survey

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...

A P2P-Based Strongly Distributed Network Polling Solution

Several activities are employed in network management to ensure correct network operation, including administration, monitoring, and provisioning of network devices. Among them, one of the most CPUand bandwidth-intensive tasks is network polling. Although this task has to be performed in several real network management situations, it presents serious scalability and fault tolerance drawbacks if...

Scalable Reputation Management for P2P MMOGs

Networked virtual environments (VEs) such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) have become very popular in recent years. However, existing client-server architectures suffer from resource constrains when the number of concurrent users increases. Research on peer-to-peer virtual environments (P2P-VEs) thus tries to create more scalable and affordable VEs via the resource sharing of mutu...
